Fabrication of Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSC) Using Mg-Doped ZnO as Photoanode and Extract of Rose Myrtle (Rhodomyrtus tomentosa) as Natural Dye

A dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) device using Mg-doped Zn thin films as photoanode and fruit extract of rose myrtle (Rhodomyrtus tomentosa) the natural dye was investigated. The effect annealing temperature (400-550°C) on systematically studied an X-ray diffractometer (XRD), UV-Visible Near Infrared (UV-Vis NIR) Spectrophotometer, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). XRD confirm that all sample has wurtzite hexagonal with crystallite size 25 nm. SEM images reveal particles surface ZnO film irregular shapes. Increasing leads to a larger particle slightly increases bandgap energy. sensitizer extracted strong absorption at visible light region. maximum efficiency DSSC is 3.53% Mg-ZnO annealed 500°C.

A bilayered ZnO photoanode was constructed for dye-sensitized solar cells with a high conversion efficiency of 4.0%. One layer made of ZnO nanocrystallites increases dye adsorption, and the other consisting of ZnO nanorod aggregates provides a directed electron pathway for the electron transport together with a prominent aggregation-induced light scattering.
